When a change in smell signals a health problem

In cats, appetite is tightly linked to smell. When the nasal passages are congested, commonly with an upper respiratory infection, a cat may struggle to detect food odours and eat less as a result. If a cat is off its food, congested, or drooling, a veterinary check is the safest move rather than writing it off as fussiness.5, 6

Problems that can interfere with smelling, and therefore with eating and behaviour, include:

Be cautious with essential oils, candles, and diffusers. Many essential oils can irritate airways or be toxic to pets at high concentrations, and cats are considered particularly vulnerable. If you use scented products at all, keep rooms well ventilated, give the cat an easy way to leave the area, and never apply essential oils directly to a cat's skin or coat, since they can absorb it and then ingest it during grooming.
